Though I've read about five other books by this author I have enjoyed so I will buy her again. From the beginning I found Meridith too easily lead by her next door neighbor Gavin. She didn't like or trust him. So why take his word as to who killed her father. There were witnesses. Then before her father is even buried he tells her she should marry his brother and she does. She keeps talking about her responsibility to the clan but she pretty much handed everything to the guy next store on a platter before her father even has a handful of dirt on him. Couldn't she have stalled her decision by claiming a mourning period. Does she ever stop and think? I thought the whole Mary Queen of Scots thing was absurd. Meridith gets to play Queen for a day so Mary can go off and meet her lover. Oh Please! Then poor Brice goes home to the Highlands to live with his broken heart because he needs to lead his people and she needs to lead hers. He doesn't know her very well. She dumped the whole head of the clan business on her sister and took after him like a shot. Oh well, at least it had a happy ending.Product details

Highland Barbarian Highlander Series Book 1 edition by Ruth Ryan Langan Romance eBooks Reviews
The book begins with the death of Meredeth's beloved father, killed by the highland barbarian so the rumors tell. All he wanted was peace for the Lowland clans. Gareth, neighboring clan, quickly tries to force her to wed into his family, his younger brother, to combine the two clans to better fight off the barbarians of the Highlands. As Meredeth is facing her groom, a man she does not love, but will wed for the good of the clan, who appears but the highland barbarian himself, sending a arrow into the heart of her groom, stating that he has come to clear his good name of the lies being spread about him, thinking that he has ended Gareth's life, not the brother. Gareth's, then himself shoots an arrow at Brice, with the results being the death of many innocent clan members. Brice then swops down, grabbing Meredeth I to his arms, and steals her away to his highland home.
Meredeth knows not what to expect as she is locked in Brice's rooms, forced to share his bed to sleep in. The next day, much to her surprise, enters Mary, Queen of Scots, and friend to Brice. Sound exciting yet? Then you must read the book to find out what happens to right the wrongs!
This was a nice book and one of the best I've read in this genre. Everything I consider necessary in a book to keep me happy was there - I really wanted to love the book but ended up just liking it! What a pity!
The scenery was described very vividly, thus created the perfect setting for the plot to unravel. The plot itself wasn't anything new or outstanding, however, it was well worked out and offered even some elements of suspense. The tension between the hero/ine was palpable and well developed. Why then only 3,5 *?! Well, the devil is in the details and in this story the details seriously lacked. SPOILERS!!! Of course I know that the further back one goes in time the shorter life expectancy was, hence people got married etc. earlier than today. However, the female main character was only 17 years old. Fair enough and why not, but Meredith definitely acted more mature than this age. Another thing that bothered me was the "Queen Mary"-issue. The first appereance of Queen Mary and her impersonation by Meredith, which was in Brice's keep, was fine with me but the second one, which was in Edinbourough didn't work for me. I don't believe in using "real" personalities in fictional ways, except if there's an author's note that explains were fiction starts/ends. Finally, there was the HEA, which I was really looking for since Brice and Meredith found themselves between the devil and the blue sea. Imagine my disappointment to find out that Meredith chose the easy way.
Anyway, besides above, this was a nice read.
I read and listen to so many books, but to my knowledge this is my first book by Ruth Langan, and I look forward to reading more by her in the future. She is a very talented author who is able to seamlessly draw you into the story, relate to her characters and describe the setting, without being too wordy.
"Highland Barbarian" captured my attention from start to finish. Both H & H were likable characters; honorable leaders of their Clans. Meredith MacAlpin was trained by her Lowlander father, a fair Laird and great warrior, to become The MacAlpin when her father died. Her duty was to her Clan and her 2 younger sisters; to do what was best for her Clan, even at a great personal sacrifice by marrying a man she could never love. Laird Brice Campbell, known as the Highland Barbarian, was deeply loved and respected by his Clan, but feared and hated by others who heard rumors of his barbaric acts against men, women, children and animals.
It was no wonder, when Brice killed Meredith's husband at the church while repeating their vows, and kidnaps her, fear pierced her heart. But she was The MacAlpin, a trained warrior, and she vowed to hide her terror and find a way to escape.
This book has all the elements that make a great read; intrigue, romance, humor, traitors, kidnapping, battles, revenge, etc.. Ms Langan has the ability to stir strong emotions in the reader. A great read, and highly recommended.
Great story! I am glad I stumbled upon this book. I loved the love story between Brice and Meredith. This story had everything, fighting, deceit, and passion. I was sad it ended - so I bought the other books in this series. I highly recommend this book- it won't disappoint !
