The Secret of Ella and Micha Jessica Sorensen 9781939045010 Books
This book has a little bit of everything, angst, heartbreak, loss, friendship and romance. It's a story about a childhood friendship that changes and grows into something much more than either Ella or Micha expected. One of the many things I enjoyed about the books was Ella. She's one bad-ass heroine who doesn't take any crap and I love her for that! I love that she's sexy, a tomboy AND she knew about cars! I can't change a tire to save my life!!! And even though she tries desperately to change who she is, the real her starts to resurface (thank goodness).
Ella's relationship with Micha is so special that I couldn't help but root for them to make it as a couple despite their tough upbringing and the ugliness that plagues their life. There are moments that I thought were so sweet that I got a little choked-up, especially when Micha tries to get Ella away from the bridge. That was heart breaking and I loved every minute of it. Micha is rough and tough (or so he seems because he's really not) but he's also a musician who cares for Ella so deeply that he's willing to sacrifice his dream for her. *sigh* Yep, he's totally dreamy! The supporting characters, Ethan and Lila are equally as awesome. Lila is a total princess who meets Mr. Grease Monkey himself. A beautiful supporting couple indeed!!!
The book moves at a good pace but two topics that are focal point in the book, bipolar disorder and suicide were completely glossed over. Those are heavy issues that could have been explored a lot more but since it wasn't, it left me feeling somewhat unfulfilled. I want to understand why a character is the way she is and not left on my own to figure it out. That's the only concern/issue I had with this book but the rest is fantastic; it's sexy, great writing, a touch of angst and I was able to connect with the characters!!
"I love you, Ella May and nothing will ever change that. You can push me away -run away - and I will still love you."
My final two cents: I want my very own Micha and I'm totally looking forward to the follow-up book, The Forever of Ella and Micha.

The Secret of Ella and Micha Jessica Sorensen 9781939045010 Books Reviews
I don't get it. There were SO MANY five star reviews, so many people raving about this book, I had very high hopes for it. I even waited for the sequel to come out so I could go from this one to the next without pause.
But, after reading this, I am so disappointed in this book--I am sorry I got sucked into (what must be) fake reviews.
I just have no other explanation for why a story that makes no sense, contains huge logic gaps in plot and whose characters are one-dimensional and never develop, gets such high ratings.
Here are some questions (perhaps for the author to consider when she rewrites this (hopefully, accidentally published) first draft)
1. How did Ella get into college when her grades in high school were so poor? (All C's she said) and at the last minute?
2. How was Ella living at home all summer without a job?
**Semi-spoiler (although SO OBVIOUS it's hard to actually call it that)
3. Why was a 17 year old expected to look after a mentally disturbed adult, by herself?
Seriously, they all talk about how she made a mistake by going to a party. But really, the person who made a mistake was the adult who left a teenager in charge of an unpredictable, volatile person with a bi-polar disorder (or whatever it was she had)
4. Why did Micha's father leave and then behave that way toward him?
****
5. Why would a couple of white trash, west coast parents name their son, Micha? Were they secretly Russian?
6. Is there REALLY a mother ANYWHERE on this planet who is SO cool that having her house trashed (repeatedly) during parties and finding bras (that aren't hers) in her bed is just something to laugh over with her unemployed, teenage son? Really.
I'm sure I had many more questions but the boredom just wiped them out of my mind, I guess.
Truthfully, I found this book extremely reminiscent of many other poorly-written YA novels. There were no sympathetic characters, zero character development.... I'm not even sure anything really HAPPENS except they race cars and say "I Love You" and finally have (lame) sex. Nothing is actually resolved in this book, and certainly nothing is really a surprise, or a secret.
This wasn't the worst book of this genre I've ever read, but it definitely took a bit of effort to finish and that's really not what I'm going for when I start a book of this kind.
Fun and engrossing and sexy; a book I can't put down--that's what I want in this kind of book. But those attributes were completely missing here.
I wouldn't be this annoyed if there weren't so many glowing reviews. I expected a lot more from this story and it just wasn't there.
Next time I'll be sure to read the 1-star reviews, first.
I have had this book sitting on my kindle since it was published and haven't gotten around to reading it until now. For the most part, I thought this was a nice new adult romance. It's a friends to lovers that spans many years in the making. Both characters- Ella and Micha- have some flaws though and things from their past that continue to haunt them in the present so the build up to the romance is pretty angsty. It takes them a while to get close especially considering one left for 8 months without a word to the other, but when they finally do there are certainly fireworks. In some instances I had a hard time connecting with the characters- both of them actually. I think they were really closed off which in turn can hurt a story if readers like me aren't able to connect with them on a deep level. However, because there is a second book I gave it 4 stars. I am hoping that they open up a bit more and grow in the next one which I do plan to read.
If you like new adult romances, this is one of the popular ones that many readers rave about so I would recommend it. I can see why people love it so much.
